Welcome to the Wayside

"As Jesus was leaving, two blind men sat by the wayside. They shouted, “Eleison hemas kyrie huios Davida," which means, "Look kindly on us, Lord, son of David!" The crowd sternly ordered them to be quiet; but Jesus, compassionate, touched their eyes. At once they could see, and followed him." (Matthew 20:29-34, abridged)

A blog for whose who sit by the wayside and worship, praying that our eyes might be opened and we might be equipped to follow faithfully. Here you will find Prayers, Translations, Calls to Worship, Communion Liturgies, Dramatic Readings, and more written and adapted by Rev. Murray Speer.

New Lectionary for Creation Time in the Season of Pentecost

Resources consulted include the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), the “Season of Creation” by the Uniting Church in Australia, the Church of England’s “Creationtide”, and the “Season of Creation Lectionary” from the Anglican Church of Southern Africa.

This lectionary does not include “themes”, as most other organizations have done, including the United Church of Canada in 2011. The intent is to select readings that speak together without dictating how a liturgist or preacher will present them, trusting that users can draw out their own themes.

A few of the readings appear in the RCL on Sundays near Creation Time but not within it. These are noted in case you want to make adjustments to avoid repetition.

Finally, because Creation Time in the UCCan is linked to Thanksgiving Sunday while the RCL is linked to the start of Advent, the dates do not overlap perfectly (for example, Creation 1 sometimes replaces Proper 18 and other times replaces Proper 19). The readings for Thanksgiving Sunday are the regular RCL readings.
